Simulation-based modeling means the generation of CAD models from simulation results. It is eecient to split this process into several steps, such as collection, triangulation, and segmentation of the data and surface reconstruction. The last step is solved by a physically based approach, which enables interaction intuitively, and we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution for this case. In many applications one wants to represent a real object in a CAD-system, for example, a rst design sketch in clay has to be converted into a CAD-object. This proceeding is called reverse engineering, because in the standard case, a physical workpiece is created from a CAD-model. The challenge is the conversion of the starting data|in general nothing but a large cloud of unstructured points|into a surface representation of the real object, which is of high quality and can be manipulated easily. It is useful to split this transformation into several steps: simulation # I) data collection # II) data reduction and enrichment # III) data analysis # IV) modeling # manufacturing process We outline the approaches for each problem in the following pages, where the emphasis is on the modeling part. In particular we prove the existence and uniqueness for a speciaìphysical' solution. Let us rst discuss how the data are assembled. All rights of reproduction in any form reserved.
